History of Allentown, PA

Today marks day eight of our Kickstarter campaign!

Today we celebrate the History of Allentown, Pennsylvania.  Did you know...

History of Allentown, PAWilliam Allen, chief justice of colonial Pennsylvanias Supreme Court and former mayor of Pennsylvania, drew up plans and laid out the rural village of Northhamptontown in 1762. Even though it was called Northhamptontown, from the very beginning people referred to it as Allens Town. Allen hoped that his new village would eventually become a commercial center because of its location along the Lehigh River. In the early 1770s, William gave the property to his son, James, who built Troutt Hall, a country home named in honor of his fathers hunting and fishing Lodge.

Allentown remained a small village of German farmers and tradesmen up until the 1830s. The name Allentown was officially adopted in 1838. Allentown was Incorporated as a borough on March 12, 1867.

Have you ever driven past a small out-of-the-way village, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, and wondered why people settled there, or how that little village or burg came to be? What were the circumstances, who were the people, how long has it been there? These are some of the questions the HistOrigin™ Project will answer, while providing an educational and entertaining traveling experience.
